If you’re planning to install a pinball machine in your home, arcade, bar, or company lounge, the first step is to understand its standard dimensions and the amount of space needed around it. This ensures a smooth placement, comfortable play, and easy maintenance. Planning the dimensions properly is not only crucial for a smooth move-in, but also for ensuring enjoyable play and long-lasting machine life.

Standard Pinball Machine Dimensions

Pinball machines on the market generally have similar dimensions. While there are slight variations between brands and models, the basic measurements fall within these ranges:

Dimension Type Inches (in) Centimeters (cm)
Height 75–78 190–198
Depth 51–55 129–140
Width 28–29 71–74

What do these dimensions mean?

Height is measured from the bottom of the pinball machine where it touches the ground to the top of the light box at the top of the machine. The lightbox is the vertical display that shows scores, animations, and other visuals, and is essentially the “face” of the machine. This height tells you how much clearance the machine needs, especially to avoid obstructions from ceilings or overhead lighting.

The depth is the length of the pinball machine from the front player area (where the coin slot and buttons are located) to the back of the machine, including the thickness of the main console and lightbox. Simply put, it’s the “length” of the machine. This dimension determines how deep the room should be when placing the machine to avoid blocking aisles.

The width is the widest part of the machine, typically the width of the main gaming table. The width determines how much space the machine takes up on both sides. The room should be wide enough to avoid placing the machine too close to walls to prevent bumps.

The machine is quite heavy, generally weighing 250 to 325 pounds (113 to 147 kilograms). It’s best to move it with two people or use a wheeled cart for safety and ease of movement.

The machine has four adjustable feet underneath for height adjustment and stability. You can also adjust the tilt of the tabletop, about 6 to 7 degrees, which will affect the speed of the ball and make the game more enjoyable.

Planning the Space Around the Pinball Machine

Once you know the machine’s dimensions, remember to leave space around it to ensure smooth play, easy viewing, and convenient maintenance.

  1. Leave enough space in the front.
We recommend at least 36 inches (91 cm). This allows players ample room to maneuver while standing and easily push the machine to get the ball moving (called “nudging”). It also provides space for those waiting in line to stand.
  2. Leave some space on both sides of the machine.
12 to 18 inches (30 to 46 cm) on each side is ideal. This prevents the machine from being pushed against the wall, preventing damage, and allows for easy viewing from others. It also makes it easier to open the side door during maintenance.
  3. Don’t leave too much space behind the machine.
We recommend 6 to 12 inches (15 to 30 cm). This ensures access to the power plug and allows for easy repairs to the light box and internal wiring.
  4. Leave space between multiple machines.
It’s best to allow 6 to 12 inches (15 to 30 cm) of space between machines. This prevents players from bumping into each other while gaming, allows for easier movement for maintenance personnel, and creates a more organized environment.

Virtual Pinball Machine 32–49in with LED and Vibration, Home & Arcade Coin Mode, 66–1700 Games

Summary

Approximate machine dimensions:
Height 75–78 inches (190–198 cm)
Depth 51–55 inches (129–140 cm)
Width 28–29 inches (71–74 cm)

Allow adequate space:
Front 36 inches (91 cm)
Sides 12–18 inches (30–46 cm)
Back 6–12 inches (15–30 cm)

Remember to measure the space in your home or shop ahead of time and plan a moving route to ensure the machine fits properly. The machine is heavy, so be careful when moving it, and it’s best to work with two or more people.
This way, the machine will be placed comfortably, comfortable to use, and easy to maintain, making it more enjoyable to play!
